No sound through headphones in Google Chrome

Yesterday my headphones stopped playing in the middle of a Youtube clip, worse still in the middle of a good rousing song. The problem had to be my faithful Trust wireless headphones and i cursed the technology gods for now i would have to return to wired. I tried the receiver in different USB ports, twiddled knobs and replaced drivers to no avail. Head in my hands in despair i received a new email, *pling*. Ah new mail i wonder what it …….. wait a minute i heard that sound …… through my headphones!

And then i got off my brain and did some real testing.

  • Different browser
  • Media Player
  • Video through VLC

The problem was Google Chrome or more specifically Adobe Flash player in Google Chrome and i solved the problem thusly.

Open a new tab in Chrome and type chrome://plugins/
Hit Enter. This will take you to the plugins page for your Chrome browser.
Click Details in the top right hand corner
Find Adobe Flash Player (There will be two versions – probably)
Disable the top one (by clicking Disable – obvious i know)
Restart the browser and watch your favourite Youtube video with sound.

Bingo! Problem solved. I get to keep my wireless headphones.

Thank you a lot, I actually had a different problem. Everytime i switched my “default playback device” my entire browser would stop playing any sounds until i completely restarted it. After disabling this plugin it worked fine. Thank you :)

Did the problem comme back eventually? My discovery was that Chrome wouldn’t correctly detect plugging/unplugging headphones and required a restart. This always results in a force quit, but the audio always works on restart.

Thank you so much! I would have never figured that out, and chrome is definitely a necessity.
